Some things don't take much time: One day after the Swiss financial market regulator Finma decided to allow the digital identification of customers, UBS announced that new clients will be able to open accounts digitally. Starting today.

Starting today, prospective customers can open a UBS bank account digitally via an app on their smartphone, the company said in a statement. The client needs to be domiciled in Switzerland and 15 years of age.

The new customers has to download an application and then identify himself in a conversation with a member of staff at UBS via video link. Following the identification, the client will receive the contract via email. He needs to print it out, sign it and send it back to UBS.

Physical Signature

This procedure is necessary because the application for a credit card, part and parcel of an account at UBS, still requires this type of physical signature.

The UBS offer comes a mere day after Finma released the regulation on the use of video and online identification of customers. The identification via video link was Finma's preferred option.
