The resurgence of the pandemic in the form of a new, rapidly-spreading variant is putting the brakes on plans for the alpine confab to return early next year.

The organizers of the World Economic Forum, or WEF, are pushing back the annual conference of key policymakers, business figures, politicians, and celebrities that was due to take place from January 17 to 21, they said in a statement. It plans to hold the conference in physical form early in the summer.

«Despite the meeting’s stringent health protocols, the transmissibility of omicron and its impact on travel and mobility have made deferral necessary,» the Geneva-based think-tank which organizes WEF said. It hasn't taken place in its traditional form since nearly two years ago.

WEF wants participants to instead join a series of sessions in January «bringing together global leaders online to focus on shaping solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges,» it said.
