2022 has been a record year for cryptocurrency theft with hacks reaching $3 billion thus far, according to blockchain specialist Chainalysis.

Gross loss from cryptocurrency theft reached $3 billion year-to-date, according to Chainalysis in a social media post, via 125 hacks.

Just weeks into October, crypto theft already totalled $718 million, making it the biggest month for crypto hacking activities this year. Last week, for example, about $100 million of Binance coins were lost with the crypto giant saying that it will «in all likelihood […] will cover any fund that the hackers get away with».

DeFi protocols were the most common target for hacks, especially by the likes of North Korean-linked groups which have stolen around $1 billion, according to Chainalysis estimates earlier this year.
