The bank was rocked by a major money-laundering scandal three years ago. The alleged crimes in the «Troika Laundromat» involved laundering billions of euros in funds from Russia and the former Soviet republics via its branch in Estonia.

Blessing, who joined Danske's board of directors as a member in 2020, headed Germany's Commerzbank from 2008 to 2016 amid the financial crisis. After a rather weak performance in the division, he was succeeded by former Credit Suisse manager Iqbal Khan in 2019
