The third and newest member of the Swiss central bank is a long-tenured US Federal Reserve specialist.

Antoine Martin is to complete the Swiss National Bank's governing board triumvirate, succeeding Andréa Maechler who resigned on 30 June this year to subsequently take up the function of deputy general manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel in September.

The Federal Council, the executive branch of the Swiss government, elected Martin after a relevant proposal was submitted to them by the SNB's banking council. Martin will take up his new function at the start of 2024, the Federal Council indicated in a media release on Friday. At the SNB, Martin will be responsible for the so-called Department III which is responsible for money markets, foreign exchange, asset management, banking operations, and information technology.

Extensive Experience

Martin is a financial specialist born in 1969 and he is currently a research advisor for financial stability policy research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He comes from Froideville in Canton Vaud and studied economics at the University of Lausanne after which he obtained his doctorate in 2001 from the University of Minnesota.

Subsequently, he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, moving to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 2005, holding various leadership positions during his tenure there.

He has also addressed the challenges of a central bank in numerous academic analyses and research papers,» the Federal Council indicated in the announcement.

Additional Appointments

The Federal Council also appointed Andreas Dietrich and Renaud de Planta as the two new members of the Swiss National Bank's banking council and re-elected Christian VittaChristoph Ammann and Cornelia Stamm Hurter as well as Barbara Janom Steiner, who remains chairwoman.
